Recharging the Introvert and the Extrovert

Posted by jesse on May 22, 2020 5:32:03 AM

There is no shortage of written work on the difference between the introverted and extroverted personality style.  From their tendencies in work, play and relationships to which is a ‘better’ way to be there are many theories.  Interestingly, despite this abundance of information, most people are still getting it wrong.

Join Ovation Communication Experts Shona Welsh and Jan Bailey in this candid conversation about the actual difference between introverts and extroverts and why it matters.  Communication can be a challenge in many or any environment, but when we give ourselves excuses to not improve because ‘that is the way I am’ … well, the consequences can be lasting.  Introverts are not (necessarily) shy, extroverts are not (always) loud and obnoxious and whether you are one or the other it does not dictate your ability to be an effective communicator in public or in private.

Introvert or extrovert | what does it matter?

In a world where celebrity of any sort is heralded, extroversion certainly seems to be in the spotlight, but you might be surprised by how many of those ‘out there’ stars, singers or athletes you admire would consider themselves introverted. These people have stepped outside the stereotype and are an excellent demonstration of dynamic introverts in the spotlight.

Spoiler alert

Whether you tend toward introverted or extroverted behaviour is determined  by where and how you recharge your batteries.  Quite contrary to what has become popular opinion, it has nothing to do with your ability to shine in a crowd, on a stage or in the boardroom.

In this time of unprecedented stress and strain on emotions and mental health, knowing how you need to recharge your batteries so you can face unusual and prolonged challenges is essential.  By recognizing where you sit on the spectrum, you can more effectively and more easily find ways to energize and be your best self – and the benefits of that are too many to count.
